Previewing: A Preventive Strategy that Promotes Adaptive Development

Clinical observation has disclosed a phenomenon of interaction operating within the mother-infant relationship that serves to enhance adaptive development and generate an attuned rapport within the dyad. This phenomenon, referred to as previewing, integrates the mother’s subjective perceptions of the infant with the objective manifestations that occur during interaction. The therapeutic use of previewing as a preventive strategy can play a prominent role in averting the emergence of psychopathology within the dyadic relationship.
