Toward a Multimodal Communication Theory of Psychotherapy: The Vicarious Coprocessing of Experience
Abstract
In “talking” therapy, the personal-experience narrative provides a vehicle through which the patient and therapist can vicariously coprocess experience. This is a common therapeutic process that is also found in music, movement, and art therapies. Evidence from anthropology, experimental psychology, clinical experience, and ordinary social behavior is presented to support this hypothesis.
