A Paradoxical Effect of Guilt in the Psychotherapy of Children

The author describes the therapeutic pitfalls in child therapy of paradoxical naughtiness and destructive behaviors due to unrecognized guilt. The development of the loving and prohibitive superego resulting in guilt in children is described. A case vignette illustrates how these superego structures and guilt can be conceptualized to the child.
