Warming Up to a Cold-Sick Spouse
Abstract
This article explores the problems faced in working with the “cold-sick/love-sick” marital system. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of these relationships and the variety of cold-sick/love-sick partners seen in treatment. Utilizing case illustrations, treatment strategies for both the love-sick wife and the dificult to engage cold-sick husband are described. The paper emphasizes the importance of forming an alliance with the husband while empathically responding to his wife’s pleading, hurt, yet angry expressions of longing.
