The Effect of Juvenile-Onset Manic-Depressive Disorder on the Developmental Tasks of Adolescence

Manic-depressive disorder that develops during adolescence can seriously disrupt this crucial developmental phase. The nature of the endogenous manic-depressive swings is such that they undermine the acquisition of confidence and initiative. Having to deal with a psychiatric illness can further impede maturation. An illustrative case is described and the importance of psychotherapy is discussed.
