Avoidance-Reduction Therapy for Stuttering

Stuttering is a communication disorder with unknown etiologies whose victims have been helped transiently or sporadically by previous therapies. Historical approaches to treatment are described. The author presents avoidance-reduction therapy as a specific eclectic approach to treatment with emphasis on the interpersonal dynamics of the stutterer resulting in an increase in self-esteem.
